How Bad Are You?
Don’t worry much, I’m not pointing figure at you reading my post. I’m actually referring to the National Sports Association (NSA) that is the highest authority for the promotion of Wushu Sports in Singapore, which include wushu, lion dance, dragon dance, qigong, etc. etc… Objectives in unifying various wushu organizations of different schools; to promote wushu, lion dance, dragon dance and qigong; to promote physical fitness and patriotism among Singaporeans; and to develop the martial spirit.
Every year, during wushu, dragon and lion dance competition, there bound to be voices of complain. Complain on judges being unfair ( “kelong~ kelong~” ). Complain on the organisation being sloppy and unprofessional.
But just how bad are they (you)?
If you still do not know who I’m talking about, I’m actually referring to Singapore Wushu Dragon & Lion Dance Federation (SWDLF), formally known as – Singapore National Wushu Federation (SNWF), originally known as – Singapore National Pugilistic Federation.
Before we even get to How Good or Bad they perform during the competition as a professional organisation, just a browse through their website give you an image on how good or bad an image they portray.
- They had change their organisation name from SNWF to SWDLF, but their website domain is still snwf.org.sg, with a additional wuzong.com.
- Some of the document, including the constitution, within the website still state Singapore National Wushu Federation or SNWF.
Probably they are not so technical incline, so lets give them some benefits of doubts…
Evey year, during competition, regardless wushu, dragon or lion dance, did you hear or see any publicity, seriously?
Every year, during competition, regardless wushu, dragon or lion dance, did you hear many complains, seriously?
Is it really the lack of good leader within the organisation that makes them such terribly organisation, today? Or is it the politics within the committee? Surely some high ranking position had read SgWutan.com. I don’t think Mr Ang or Dr Teo is such useless leader that they didn’t hear such noise being made, which even made it to xin dot sg.
Every since Ng Kim Foo taken the chair as Secretary General, I just got the feeling that the organisation had turn from bad to worst. Singapore wushu team seems not able to get any good results in international meets. Probably the dragon and lion dance had better luck, but it is not fully acknowledge or recognise as a merit.
I personally felt that the appointment of Yap Poh Guan as the Chairman for Judges Sub-Comm is really unjustifiable. Sure he may has knowledge in dragon and lion dance art, but how strong is he in the field of sports wushu, or even traditional system? But no choice. He is rightfully voted into the chair, very much like the Aware Saga?
Our neighbouring country had been progressing very fast. Singapore used to have top wushu exponent within the South East Asia region. Now we can’t even compare ourselves with Philippines or Vietnam! The Philippines Wushu Federation has a much younger team within the committee, all really putting good effort in promoting and bringing their level higher.
Many of us hold the passion into the pugilistic art and we seriously hope to promote the art to a higher level. We can’t really change much except to wait for the next election and hopefully by then, they are better candidates to run for the positions.

can’t comment too much on your points as the most of the time I am just in the audience of events organised by them.
Certainly more publicity on their events will be good. Sometimes those in the wushu circle also do not know of these events. Posters on MRT stations notice boards is not enough. More policing on “tanjiasia” during CNY will be good or else what the point for troupes paying to apply for a permit.
“…. there are better candidates to run for the positions.”
If i read the constitution correctly, “better candidates” have to start to find support among the ordinary members to vote them into the management committee. Incumbents usually have their support base which is how they got voted in the first place.
