Ip Man, The Legend – Preview

Went to the preview invitation with LC on Thursday, 17 June 2010, to watch Ip Man : The Legend is Born.

Produced by Checkley SIN, the producer of IP Man series,  stars IP Chun, the eldest son of Master IP Man, as Leung Pik, IP Man’s second Wing Chun master, Dennis TO Yu Hang, the youngest World Kung Fu Champion of Hong Kong who plays the young IP Man and FAN Siu-wong, who also performed in the IP Man series.

It is about around Ip Man’s resistance against invading foreigners, along with his romantic relations while under the tutelage of three Wing Chun masters. Still, as previous Ip Man movies, it didn’t really show case what is Wing Chun.

There are less fighting scene compared to Donnie Yan Ip Man and Ip Man 2. Probably because this film is more on the life of Ip Man before he moved to Hong Kong.

Although no teaching on history and development of Wing Chun, the film did mentioned a few oral teaching within Wing Chun style. And importantly, the meaning behind Authentication (正宗). One had to look beyond the lineage to really accept to such.

Overall, it is a good movie, but not to my expectation. Worth the watch if you treat it as a movie, cos I’m looking for more, which was not mentioned in the film. I also hope that, after watching the 3 Ip Man films, people don’t think that Wing Chun is just about Piew Ji, Cham Kew and Wooden Dummy.
