[Self-Defence] – Good Street Weapon

From the topic Rape Prevention on eastpaw’s comment -

Keys are such pathetic weapons they would only do more harm than good.

Which get me thinking, hence this post – What is a good weapon when situation happens on the street? Is there a good weapon in the first place?

Before we go into the finding of a good weapon, I would like to bring your attention to why I chose the “Keys” to be a useful weapon for the girls.

Singapore is relatively a safe country. Our gahmen had good control on weapons, including fire arms. But being safe doesn’t means there is no situation and definitely there are armed situation. Most common would be knife robbery, in the lift or on the streets.

But lets look at the “Keys”.

“Keys” are everyday item. It is found in your bag or pockets. Some hang around your neck or clip it on your belt. Almost every adults holds a set of “Keys” every sec while they are on the move. Hence to me, it is the most easily accessible item. which is sharp, hard and easily use, especially by a female, who is by gender norm, the fairer sex.

The key to is to properly hold the “Keys” and the knowledge of how-to-use that make the “Keys”, IMO, a suitable weapon for the ladies. It is a mimic of the cat claw with the bio-mechanic of a human arm movement.

I’m sorry to say I can’t display the image of holding the key in the public blog, but for those who are interested, do drop me a tinkle and I shall, by my own judgment, forward you the image.

Now, is there a Good Weapon when situation arises on the street?

In the dojo, we practise short staff, cudgel, parring knifes, etc etc… but these are items that you had to be trained on and you don’t bring out as a daily item, or do you?

Other object that can be of a weapon include ladies high heels, pointed umbrella, swiss knife (not allow on planes), scissors (not alone allow on planes), axe-oil (medicated oil);  street weapon include beer bottle, ash-tray (glass type), chairs, chop-sticks, broom… blar blar blar. I trust you can slowly make out a list of items.

So is there a good weapon base on the above list? For what I see, you got to know how to use them to classify it as a weapon, else it is just a piece of ordinary item.

End of the day, a good weapon, or should we say – the BEST WEAPON – is actually

Will try to learn on how to make use of my key. tks for reminding!

Keys are a good weapon, but like anything-do you know how to use it in a street situation, otherwise it is a moot point for any weapon. I am not from singapore and unfamiliar with their laws. Keys are a very dangerous weapon if you know how to use-can easily gut and seriously main and kill with it. However if they have a long knife you are at a disadvantage. If have to make a choice, nice retratractable metal baton is good, or a walking cane with a designer handle made of metal-but I don’t that girls would care for that.

But consider-how is the car parked? Side by side or like on the street in a single file. This matters because a medium or long weapon is useless between cars, again though it is useless if you don’t know how or have ability to use the weapon-it may do more harm then good.

Just my 2 cents that is worth 1/4 cents due to inflation.

I guess I should have qualified my statement.

Sure, anything can be useful in the right hands, but we’re talking about an untrained woman.

Could such an untrained woman be taught to use keys effectively in self-defence? Maybe, but it would take a heckuva lot of drilling, and that’s assuming the adrenaline dump during a real situation doesn’t cause her hands to turn into mittens.

Just telling the average woman to use her keys isn’t going to help her much.

I had taught some female the use of “Keys” as a self-defence tools. The technique of holding is simple. The skills to use it is simple. But most have yet been in a situation to “test” out the “Keys”, hopefully not.

The only thing that I can’t train them is to be calm when situation arises. Even for a trained person, if he/she cannot get hold of himself/herself in a situation, it is over.

I suspect that if someone attacked ah^gao or William, and they had keys on them, their attacker would be in for a bad day. But they’re martial artists with years of training and assumably quite a bit of fighting experience. They’d give their attacker a bad day even if they were attacked in the buff. :D

I rather doubt that someone else with three self-defence lessons’ worth of training would perform as handily in an actual situation. Remember the odds will be stacked against them. If they fail to avoid the fight/rape/robbery/whatever, they’re most probably gone.

Here’re a couple of links I have found very sensible. Perhaps you would like to take a look too and see if what is said there makes sense to you as well:
