[Self-Defence] – Prevention

The best medicine of most sickness is prevention. It is the same for self-defence.

Knowing the possible crime that may happen and do not place yourself in that situation will prevent a lot of things from happening.

In a safe country like Singapore, how do we know what sort of crime and make necessary prevention to it?

Before we get into preventing, lets look at what is self-defence. From Dictionary.com, self-defence can mean:

  1. the act of defending one’s person when physically attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming an assailant: the art of self-defense.
  2. a claim or plea that the use of force or injuring or killing another was necessary in defending one’s own person from physical attack.
  3. an act or instance of defending or protecting one’s own interests, property, ideas, etc., as by argument or strategy.

With the definition above, one had to be (1) physically able to retaliate; (2) well verse in combat; (3) has an weapon the one has knowledge on how to use it.

Damn~ is that really self-defence or a trained combat fighter?

IMO, self-defence is suppose to get oneself out of a crime situation, safely, with minimum harm to either the attacker or the victim. Or was I the only one that is having this mis-conception all along?

Well, you place your own decision in what form of self-defence would mean better to you.

I had discuss about rape prevention and I hope this will bring well information to the ladies. In the next few weeks, I will try to bring some other form of prevention with relate to some common crimes like street thief, etc…

Before I end this post, please feel free to drop me any crime scene that you think it might happen in Singapore that is worth exploring and I will try to find some answer of self-defence prevention to it.

Haha-Bruce Lee once said in a movie-The art of fighting without fighting.

Every country has there own laws and that must be taken into account when defending yourself. In the US, there is a limit. Meaning you cannot use excessive force. However, when in dire straights sometimes one can’t take the time to know what is excessive. A friend’s father was accosted by a mugger with a knife. He dislodged the knife from the mugger and in the process to beat the guy till the mugger dropped which is how he was taught to fight. Well, he hit the guy 10-15 times (he lost count-haha), the guy was bust up all over had to go to hospital. Well my friend’s father was charged with excessive use of force. He got a suspended sentence because of situation and his upstanding work in the communitty. The Judge said that she could understand hitting him several times, but 10-15 times was to much since he disarmed the attacker. He should have left the scene and gone for help or call police. go figure.

Singapore is a country where a policeman is questioned in court for shooting a man who just stabbed someone and charges at the policeman with a knife.

… I’m not sure how much wiggle room you get by pleading self-defense if you actually have to get into a serious fight.
