Street vs Dojo
After my post about Rape Prevention, I just wanna let all the ladies know, rushing off to a dojo and start taking up self-defense course does not necessary equip you with the ability to defend yourself when situation arises.
Some goes to those macho guys that think that after 2 years of TKD, Karate-do or Wushu training, you are able to take down that “ang-kong-kia” with you Haaaa-kata~
Dojo is a place where you train. It is a safety training ground. No matter how hard you kick or punch, you are mostly with protection gears. Whereas on the street, you can see flying chairs and bottles, hidden pocket knife/swiss army knife, and even soft drink cans are good “weapon”.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying your sensei is bullshitting you when he show you his power to take down anyone that comes near him, in the dojo, and you think: “Man, I wanna train just like him…”.
Under the safe training environment of a dojo, you can train – power, agility, flexibility, stunning speed and reflex, etc… But are this enough to help you on the streets, where anything and everything could happened?
Master of the past century had gone through some form of street-wise situation, hence they are able to “defend” themselves to a certain level with they dojo training. And many times, during that era, their training are much more “unsafe”.
Now… this era… you still think you are equipped with good training in the dojo to fend yourself when situation arises?

Attitude attitude attitude! You have to train that SOB side of of you which is no an easy thing to do. As Ah^Gao stated, it is one thing to practice in the safe confines of the guan or dojo where someone will break up the fight or stop it. Most however, become like a deer in headlights. Even if they don’t freeze some of the techniques that work in competition will only get you hurt. Unless you train like the movie Fight Club it is hard to tell if you the “it” that is required.
actually if u have gone thru World War 1 or 2, then i consider a person street fighter.
Many “martial arts” classes don’t even have a combative component anymore. If one does not practise conditioning, fighting drills, and sparring, one would make a weak-ass fighter even in the safe, cosy dojo.
