Wushu trio’s thrilling routine lands S’pore gold

Singapore’s wushu trio of Tay Yu Juan, Khor Poh Chin and Tao Yijun emerged victorious in the women’s duilian (with weapons) event.

The wushu event, which pits the one-minute choreographies of competing teams against each other, was a blur of rapid weapon thrusts and acrobatic flips, as the competitors thrilled the spectators at the Lao International Trade Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The Singapore trio – with Khor and Tao on spears and Tay on double broadsword – triumphed over Indonesia and Brunei, scoring 9.46 points to the other two teams’ 9.45 points.

The small price they had to pay for the narrow win? A slight nick on Tao’s nose during their routine, which drew a trace of blood.
